This project saw us take a material-driven design approach to Product Design; the brief focused on the unfavoured farming by-product, strong wool. We spent eight weeks researching strong wool, examining its properties and existing uses, and then developed feasible products that showcased its natural properties.
My response to the brief was a product named Tapsy, a strong-wool beer tap cover system that leveraged the natural moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial properties of strong wool to prevent fruit flies, stock contamination, and yeast buildup. Tapsy starts as a digitally-knitted strong wool tube, eco-dyed and carefully dipped in beeswax for pliability and anti-microbial attributes. The system also comes with 3D printed polylactic acid covers and a storage system designed for use behind a bar. The design language stems from this environment, also being a modular system to maximise space efficiency in a busy environment.
