My graduate project involved taking a multidisciplinary approach to Fashion design. I used my product design skills to research and identify a problem that can be solved through sustainable fashion solutions, human disconnect.
I explored root problems in relation to societal disconnect and found that transitional spaces in our daily lives have an evident psychological and emotional effect on humans.
In response to this problem, I re-interpreted historical problem-solving garments into a modern, modular wardrobe that promotes human reconnection. My work promotes this physical and emotional connection through its design language. Buttons and zips on the back of garments encourage the wearer to communicate with others in order to correctly wear the garments, promoting intentional wearing.
The panels that button on and off all of the garments in the collection offer personalised utility to the wearer. Each panel tells a story and invites wearers to share and exchange the panels. I focused on tactility and functionality when it came to fabric choice; cotton and wool were favourable in this collection for their historical ties and fitness for purpose. I also used faraday fabric, an EMF blocking fabric made from various metals, to create a unique ‘quiet’ phone pocket that disconnects the user from their device.
